about this ecommerce life

This is a comic for online marketers and store owners.

It’s written and created by Datch Haven, an experienced digital marketer and ecommerce guy who has picked a side between the corporations who write their dollar valuations with 13 digits and the online entrepreneurs.

The main comics are illustrated by David Camancho, a talented cartoonist whose patience has yet to crack under Datch’s vague outlines and revisions.

This website was built by the veteran team at Shop Innovator. They are the reason it can actually function and do ecommerce things instead of just being a blog.

more about this ecommerce life

I started working on this comic around January 2025 when I was much younger. I'd been wrestling with the idea of making YouTube videos to teach ecommerce. But it turns out making videos requires less self loathing than I was prepared for.

Then I came across Tom Fishburne's Marketoonist. Wha-? Comics about business? This had never occurred to me. So I put down my NyQuil bottle and read his whole website and physical book in one go. It's funny! But it's only for an audience who lives in that world.

I started jotting some ideas down. They were ok. My ideas dripped with a venom toward the colossal entities I battled every day, and that was a start.

It turns out there's an art to comics. L'arte de comique! Yes, one can appreciate it as a reader, of course. But tapping into it as a creator is.., as they say, a whole other bottle of NyQuil.

So I began some heavy reading. The approximately 78lb hardcover tome of "The Complete Far Side" by Gary Larson. It helped me loosen up and re-view things in their absurdity.

Never mind YouTube! This was how to share the common frustrations an ecommerce store owner or marketer. With a medium that would allow me to write my comic collections off as a business expense.

Tragically, I have the drawing skill of a baby squirrel wearing mittens. So I scoured the Upworks for an illustrator to translate my drawings and Google Docs into comics. I connected with David Camancho and he's awesome.

When you find someone good at what they do, and willing to give a damn about doing it well for you, hold onto them like grim death. When I put it like that he gets a rather uncomfortable look on his face, but that's just how I feel.

And here we are. You reading this site.

Oh, the site! Yeah, this site exists because of my friend, the owner of Shop Innovator. His team develops Shopify stores for businesses, and they're strong at it. Every single annoying teeny little detail I asked for, I got. They figure out how to make it work, and they give a damn about doing it well. Now I have an ecommerce site to host (and sell licenses for) the comic. All is zen, all makes sense.
